Roadie the Roadrunner and Beth Surdut

Video

Knowing I was in the presence of a giant cuckoo, a member of the Cuculidae family, I made up a song of coo-cooing invitations, which I first sang to the bird one day when I was watering. I stayed in place by the four-foot-high wall by the arroyo, repeatedly cooing. Roadie traversed the top of the wall with his zygodactyl feet, walked up to me, cocked his head, and one of us fell in love. I have been singing to him ever since.

The first time Roadie mysteriously disappeared for three months, I pined. I gave myself the talk about how I was lucky to have had time with a gorgeous giant cuckoo, but I also felt like I'd been ghosted by some guy who I seemed to be connecting with, and then poof! Gone. Then one day, Roadie runs up to my door, circling like a happy puppy when he sees me, and like old friends, we pick up where we left off.

Roadie

This wild #roadrunner walked up to me when I sang to him in October 2023 and has been visiting ever since. Companionable and curious, Roadie comes to my studio door and waits for me to sit outside with him, sometimes for hours. As of fall 2025, I am singing to Roadie on my patio in the Sky Islands.

That should tell you a lot about me.
